The 2022 Wagoneer

Wagoneer brings up memories of wood-sided family 4x4s hauling the kids off to winter vacation. Or maybe strapping some surfboards to the top, and heading down to catch some big waves. The original Wagoneer was an innovative vehicle when it was introduced, and evolved over time into a luxury leader in the category. But in 1991, it was put to rest as modern SUVs began to grab control in the market.

Now, a little over three decades later, the name has re-entered the market, but with a whole new look. The 2022 Wagoneer is a big, sleek, modern family-mover – and it might just be the new big thing in the SUV segment!

Performance Features

At the heart of the 2022 Wagoneer is a massive 5.7-liter V-8 engine with a 48-volt hybrid assist system called ETorque Hybrid Assist. Putting 392 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque on tap, the Wagoneer is responsive off the line and more than capable of overtaking on busy highways – even with a full complement of passengers and cargo. The fuel economy is as should be expected for the size and capabilities of the Wagoneer, with 16 MPG city and 22 MPG highway in the rear-wheel drive models, and 15 MPG city and 20 MPG highway in the four-wheel drive models.

Underneath the Wagoneer is the frame of a Ram 1500. This enables the Wagoneer to not just haul people, but to haul and tow cargo as well. It can tow up to 10,000 pounds when properly equipped, plenty enough to handle a camper for a weekend off the grid, or a boat for a day on the lake.

Of course, the heritage of the Wagoneer demands off-road capabilities, and it has a few different systems on offer. Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II 4×4 systems are available, and folks looking for upgraded off-road capabilities can opt for the available Quadra-Lift air suspension. Selec-Terrain traction management system allows drivers to choose the on- and off-road setting for optimum 4×4 performance, selecting from automatic as well as four distinct presets.

Style and Technology

From the outside, it’s clear that the 2022 Wagoneer is a massive vehicle. Inside, it certainly lives up to the promise. There is seating for eight provided as standard, with seven-person seating optional. First- and second-row seating is spacious – but even the third row is big enough for teens and smaller adults, with 39 inches of headroom and 36.6 inches of legroom. With the third row in place, the 27.4 cubic feet of space in the rear cargo hold is just fine for sports equipment, groceries, and other small cargo. Once you start folding seats, the interior really opens up – up to 70.8 cubic feet with the third row stowed, and a cavernous 116.7 cubic feet with the second and third rows cleared.

It’s not just having space that matters anymore, it’s what you do with it. Creature comforts abound in the Wagoneer, starting with standard leather-trimmed seating and available upgraded Nappa leather-trimmed seats. Automatic climate control with three-zone temp control means that front- and back-seat passengers can have their separate comfort levels. A tri-pane panoramic sunroof, an option across the Wagoneer line-up, opens up the cabin. The Wagoneer offers easy access, with remote proximity keyless entry, a hands-free power liftgate, and push button start standard across the board.

Tech is supreme, and there are screens throughout the interior of the Wagoneer. At the heart of it all is the Uconnect 5 system with a 10.1-inch infotainment display that includes integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and standard GPS navigation, along with a standard 9-speaker Alpine audio system. Numerous USB ports are sprinkled around the first and second rows. Amazon Alexa and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot are standard, while dual 10.1-inch rear entertainment screens with Amazon FireTV are available.

Safety

Driver-assistance systems abound in the brand-new 2022 Wagoneer. A rear back-up camera is standard across the model line-up, with a 360 Surround-View Camera available on every model. Adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and pedestrian detection with automated emergency braking are all standard across the models. Active Lane-Management is offered, as are park assist, Drowsy Driver Detection, Intersection Collision Assist, and Traffic Sign Recognition.

Trim Levels

Separated into three trim levels, the Wagoneer also offers independent upgrades. The 2022 Wagoneer is offered in both rear- and four-wheel drive at all trim levels.

Series I trim is basic, but the Wagoneer is a luxury vehicle – so even basic is incredibly well-equipped. Power-adjustability for the front row seats is standard across the lineup, as are heated and ventilated front seats and driver seat memory. Heated second-row seats are an available option. A QI-compatible wireless charging pad is available in the center console and provides a docking area for wirelessly charging small tablets or smartphones.

Moving up to Series II, Nappa leather-trimmed seating is standard, while the second row can be converted to Captains Chairs with Power Tilt/Slide adjustment. Heating the second row is still optional. The third row folding and recline can be swapped to powered from manual, making it super easy for the user to make more space for cargo! Adaptive Cruise-Control with Stop and Go is standard. The charging pad is standard on Series II and III as well. An available package offers the safety upgrades including Automatic High-Beam Headlamp, Drowsy Driver Detection, Intersection Collision Assist System, Parallel and Perpendicular Park-Assist with Stop, 360 Surround-View Camera, and Traffic Sign Recognition. Ambient LED interior lighting offers an added touch of luxury to the interior, while 20” litho aluminum wheels add it to the exterior.

Stepping into the top-of-the-line Series III trim brings standard heating to that second row of seats, and standard folding and reclining to the third row. You can again select from a bench or Captains Chairs for the second row. An available McIntosh MX950 audio system featuring 19 speakers can be added to this level, for the supreme audio experience. 20” machined aluminum wheels with Black Noise pockets are standard, and can be upgraded to 22” versions for a unique look. Door courtesy lamps light up the area around the Wagoneer at night, while available power deployable running boards make it easy to get in and out of the SUV.
